AR Rahman To Produce Music For Ranbir Kapoor’s Ramayana, Arun Govil Confirms

Legendary composer A. R. Rahman is confirmed to be producing the music for the highly anticipated mythological epic Ramayana, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi and Yash, with veteran actor Arun Govil acknowledging the collaboration this week. The announcement has added fresh excitement around one of Indian cinema’s biggest projects ahead of its planned Diwali 2026 release.

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Prime Focus Studios in partnership with Monster Mind Creations and other international collaborators, Ramayana is envisioned as a grand retelling of the ancient epic. The project features an ensemble cast that includes Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Sunny Deol as Hanuman and Ravi Dubey as Lakshman, among others.

What has particularly caught the industry’s attention is the music line-up. Rahman is working alongside Hans Zimmer, the Oscar-winning composer known for scores such as The Lion King and Inception, blending his signature sound with cinematic orchestration. This fusion aims to deliver a score that is both rooted in Indian tradition and expansive in its global musical appeal.

Rahman has spoken about the cultural significance of embracing a project rooted in India’s heritage, despite his own diverse background, noting that his education and respect for the epic’s values informed his musical approach. “I studied in a Brahmin school… People may argue, but I value all those good things — any good things that you can learn from,” he told Indian Express, underscoring his personal connection to the material.

Arun Govil, best known for his iconic portrayal of Lord Rama in the 1980s television adaptation Ramayan, confirmed Rahman’s involvement and declined to entertain controversy surrounding the composer’s recent remarks about the industry. Govil suggested queries about the creative team should be directed to the makers themselves, signalling confidence in Rahman’s role on the project.

Ramayana is being crafted as a two-part cinematic spectacle, with Part 1 scheduled for release on Diwali 2026 and Part 2 on Diwali 2027. The combination of blockbuster cast, cutting-edge VFX and monumental musical collaboration has positioned the film as one of the most anticipated releases of the year, with industry insiders dubbing it a landmark project for Indian cinema on the global stage.
